What is a QTS Check?

The APCS QTS check service enables employers to view the Department for Education record of any teacher with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

The QTS check also provides access to separate lists of:

  • teachers who have been prohibited from teaching.
  • teachers who may be the subject of a suspension or conditional order imposed by the GTCE (prior to its abolition) that is still current.
  • teachers who have failed to successfully complete their induction or probation period.

Which of my employees can have a QTS Check?

Anyone who wants to teach in a state-maintained school in England or Wales needs to gain QTS, but, although it is not mandatory for individual academies, it is highly recommended. This is because it gives portability across all sectors for teachers, and gives a consistent assessment of candidates’ qualifications.

What if my employee is found to have a sanction as a result of the QTS Check?

There are five sanctions which can be shown on a QTS check, however please note not all sanctions restrict a person from taking up a teaching role. Please contact our sister company Single Central Record who specialise in educational background checks on 0151 606 5101 or see their website here for more information.

Is a QTS Check the same as a DBS check or a Childrens Barred List check?

The QTS check is not a full criminal record check, neither does it check the Childrens Barred List, it just checks whether or not an applicant is prohibited from teaching within educational establishments.
