Standard DBS Check

This check reveals all spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands and warnings held by an applicant. Standard checks can only be applied for by employers on behalf on an employee.

Individuals cannot apply for a standard DBS check on themselves. They are available to specific job roles and all applications must meet DBS eligibility. This helps an employer establish if an individual is fit to work within a specific industry.

What does a standard disclosure show?

Most convictions are spent after a certain period of time, as long as no further offence is committed. The time taken to become spent depends on the severity of the conviction. Whilst basic checks show all unspent convictions, standard checks also reveal spent convictions.

Employers can then make informed recruitment decisions based on this information.

Who is eligible for a standard check?

Not every role or sector is eligible for Standard DBS check. A standard check is only available for positions in the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975. Please refer to the full DBS guidance here.

Examples of roles eligible for a Standard check include:

  • FCA ‘Approved Person’ Roles
  • Medical Receptionist with patient contact
  • Working in a prison
  • Specific officers for magistrates’ courts
  • Fire and Rescue Authority employees

If you are unsure whether your employees meet the DBS eligibility, please give us a call. Our processing team have an expert knowledge of the latest DBS guidance and are here to help.
