Basic DBS Check

A DBS Basic check is a type of criminal record check that shows an applicant’s unspent convictions or conditional cautions. They are available to all job roles and sectors, even for those that do not usually need a DBS check. This allows employers to make efficient, informed recruitment decisions.

Do my employees need a Basic DBS check?

A basic DBS check can be used for most job roles and sectors. This includes: hospitality, construction, retail, office work and security. Unlike standard and enhanced checks, there is no criteria that needs to be met to apply for a basic check. Employers often request basic checks to provide peace of mind and ensure a smooth recruitment process.

How much does a Basic check cost?

The total cost of a Basic DBS check is £34.70 (DBS fee £21.50, APCS admin fee £11.00+VAT). Disclosure Scotland Basic checks are £38.20 including VAT. APCS offer a discount on our DBS admin fee if you are a large business with a high volume of checks. If this sounds like your business, give us a call today on 0845 643 1145 for a no obligation quote!

How long will a Basic Check take?

Using the APCS online system, Basic checks are often completed within 24 hours. Our fastest check to date took 69 seconds from start to completion. APCS strive to ensure that we submit all applications within an hour of receiving them, hence the speedy turnaround times!

Once submitted, the applicant’s details are checked against the Police National Computer. If the check doesn’t return any matches, the result gets sent straight back to you. Matches identified on the Police National computer need further manual checks completed. This can slow down applications.

How will I receive the results for my staff?

Employers receive an email containing an E-certificate with the result of the check. The employee will receive the physical certificate in the post.

Will my Basic check go through the DBS or Disclosure Scotland?

APCS are a registered body for the Disclosure & Barring Service and Disclosure Scotland. Applicants currently living or working in England and Wales can apply for a DBS Basic Check. Individuals living or working in Scotland can apply for a Disclosure Scotland Basic check. Please note that Disclosure Scotland Basic checks are valid throughout the United Kingdom.
