As food bank use continues to rise year on year, a growing number of individuals are volunteering at food banks regularly to help those in need. With over 2,000 food banks now active across the UK, we have noticed a sharp increase in the number of DBS checks being requested for these roles. Here at APCS, we are often asked about the eligibility for working in a food bank and if an enhanced DBS check is required.
Often the wrong level of DBS check is requested for individuals volunteering at food banks. Under the DBS guidelines, people serving food, drinks or having a chat with those using the food bank would not be eligible for an enhanced DBS check. Conducting these roles within the food bank is not classed as a ‘regulated’ activity. Unfortunately, not everyone who attends the food bank would meet the Disclosure & Barring Services’ criteria for being classed as a vulnerable adult. In most cases, a volunteer in a food bank would therefore be eligible for a Basic level DBS check only. The only exception to this would be if the individual is regularly working with an organisation that is registered to carry out specific work with vulnerable adults or children within this role. In this case, it would be best to refer to the DBS guidelines with regards to vulnerable groups and regulated activity.
